Chapter Five

Jay stared at the near emancipated and unconscious body of a man curled up in chains on the floor. He was so thin that, even in the darkness, Jay’s eyes could follow the blue lines of veins and ridges of bones through the thin skin. The only reason Jay knew the person was still alive was because Smith checked his pulse and nodded sharply.

“Jay? Alpha?”

Kyle called from the other room, clearly wanting to come in and make sure they were all okay but not wanting to give away the defence position at the door in case more guards came this way.

His mate was between a rock and a hard place, and the worry was leaking through the open bond. As he got more used to stretching his senses, the easier it was to connect to the bond between them.

“We’re okay, Ky. We’re coming back through now,” Jay answered, trying to put all the reassurance he could muster into the words.

But really? This is bad whichever way I try to play it.

He didn’t even know if they would do more harm than good if they tried to move the man collapsed in the darkest corner.

Falling to his knees next to the unconscious man, Jay gently traced his fingers over the man’s sharp cheekbones. Parting the closed lids of his sunken eyes, Jay held his breath.

No! Why did it have to be Nikko? This was going to break Kyle and Mam.

The green eyes were dull with unconsciousness and whatever drugs the bastard hunters had pumped him full of, he could smell the chemicals on Nikko’s skin. But the eyes were still eerily similar to the ones he looked lovingly into every day.

“It’s him.” Dragging his dagger out from his belt, he quickly cut the cable ties that bound the man to a steel loop on the hard stone floor. Nikko had been tied up like an animal awaiting the return of its master.

This is disgusting. Inhuman and horrible. What else has he had to suffer through if he’s been with these monsters for so long?

As he leaned closer, the smell of whatever Nikko had in his system distorted the man’s scent and tickled Jay’s nose. Nikko definitely needed to get to a doctor. For all they knew, the shit the guards gave him was poison.

Jay knew Arthwr and Smith had to take point and Kyle would have to take the rear again. That left it up to him to carry Nikko and get him out safely.

Gingerly, Jay dug his hands under Nikko’s body and lifted. The broken and beaten man weighed less than he thought an adult body ever should, and it hurt to look at him. Jay stood, taking Nikko up with him, cradled in his arms, and his tears turned to anger.

Whether it takes years, the bastards are going to pay for hurting my family. He and his cat were in total agreement on that. They’d pay in blood.

Seeing Nikko in this state was going to break Eleanor and Kyle in a way Jay wasn’t sure anything could heal or fix.
